Mealtime can often become stressful with children in the picture. Whether you have to cook separate meals, have different schedules or feel like you just don’t have the time, it is important to remember how meaningful sharing a meal with your family is.
Here are our top 5 tips to making mealtime more enjoyable for everyone.
- Get the children involved
Subject to age, getting your children involved in mealtime has a range of benefits. By taking part in preparing the meals they are eating, children are far more likely to try new foods, take an interest in food and learn about all the steps involved in preparing a meal for your family. Your children will understand and learn from a young age the love and care that goes into providing nutritious meals and feel a sense of accomplishment for giving you a helping hand.
- Set specific mealtimes
Having a family means different schedules and occasionally may feel like no one is ever in the same place at the same time. Setting specific mealtimes can not only create a healthy routine, but ensures that no matter how busy life gets, there is always a time where your family can come together and relax, talk, and enjoy each other’s company.
- Take turns in the kitchen
When you are cooking for your family, you may start to feel like you are living in the kitchen, which can make mealtime feel daunting. Whether it is yourself or another family member that does the cooking, take turns or set one or two nights a week where another family member takes the reigns in the kitchen. This can alleviate some of the pressure off you and teach your children about taking turns and sharing responsibility.
- Get creative
Make mealtime fun for your family, and this doesn’t have to mean unhealthy foods. Try some ‘Saturday morning pancakes’ with smiley faces, or eggs and bacon in the shape of a face. Being creative in your meals can encourage children to enjoy eating and understand that meal time is important.
Having a few different meal options up your sleeve can be helpful in getting everyone involved in family mealtime. Although children can be fussy eaters, giving a few options can make your child feel like they are choosing what they eat, which can work to your advantage!
