4 Reasons Play is important in Kindergarten & Early Childhood

Play based learning is important as it allows children to take ownership of their learning and to let learning unfold naturally, building the foundation for who they become.” – Tracey, Kindergarten Teacher (Explorers Early Learning – Point Cook)

As adults we often remember a structured style of learning, from our kindergarten experiences right through to primary school. And as parents, we want to ensure that our children receive a valuable and rich education that incorporates maths, language and literacy concepts. In fact, children learn the same lessons through play, if not more.

Here are 4 reasons why play is important in kindergarten and early childhood:

1. Brain Development

Within play based learning experiences, children are exposed to the foundations of concepts such as maths, science, problem solving, language and more all while enjoying learning experiences that are meaningful to them.

For example:

  • Mathematical concepts such as height, balance and weight are frequently discussed and learnt when building with blocks!
  • When the home corner is transformed into a cafe, literacy concepts are learnt while writing the menu and cafe signs!
  • Science concepts are introduced when working as a group to make play-dough, mixing the ingredients and watching what happens when food dye is added!

During play, children can practice new skills multiple times in an unhurried manner. Children are able to pace themselves and build on their own unique experiences that they can then apply into other settings.

 3. Opportunities for trial and error27548328284_a5e25abca7_z

In play there are no right or wrong ways to do things! This means opportunities for trial and error where children have the freedom to participate in experiences they enjoy, building on their confidence through their successes and accomplishments.

4. Social Development28059939832_80a1d020f0_z

Social skills are so important, in particular in kindergarten whilst preparing for the first year of school. In play scenarios children learn to negotiate and read social cues, working together, taking turns, sharing and developing effective communication methods with their peers! Knowing at school its likely there will be less adult interaction, especially at recess and lunchtime, these lessons are extremely valuable for young children.

5 Reasons to choose Kindergarten in Long Day Care

Kindergarten is an important time for young children, helping them to prepare for school by developing strong social skills, improving health and wellbeing and encouraging a love of learning.  Long Day Care (Child Care or Early Learning) centres offer the same government approved Kindergarten Programs as sessional programs.

Here are 5 benefits of choosing a Kindergarten program within a Long Day Care setting!

1. The teachers have the same qualifications

All teachers running a four year old kindergarten program are required to have a government approved qualification. This means the children are getting the same education! The measure of a quality kindergarten program is not whether it is part of a Long Day Care Centre, Sessional Kinder or Private School. The measure is the quality of the kindergarten teacher and the program they provide.  So you don’t need to worry about whether your child will receive a good kindergarten education in a Long Day Care centre.

2. Convenience of longer hours

Kindergarten in Long Day Care is just so much more convenient.

  • Children attending kindergarten as part of a Long Day Care program can be dropped off at any time during the centres opening hours, making a less stressful day for working families.
  • Sessional kindergarten is more traditional with very short days that have a set drop off and pick up time.
  • Open 52 weeks a year, many kindergartens close over school holidays.

3. Convenience for younger siblings#-295

Younger siblings can attend the same centre, meaning no need for extra drop offs at different locations. This makes for a more smooth sailing morning routine!

4. Meals & Food are provided26708171150_87d9fede14_z

Majority of long day care centres provide all meals and food.  This normally includes breakfast, morning tea, a cooked lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack.  This eliminates having to prepare packed lunches each day, and you also know all meals are prepared on site and meet nutritional guidelines!

At many kinders, families normally need to prepare their child’s lunch and snacks each day.

5. Social DevelopmentScreen Shot 2016-07-21 at 1.39.59 pm

Children are enrolled as a group and move from
room to room together as much as possible, at times children can have the same peers right from attending a centre as a baby to their kindergarten year.

In summary, we recommend when choosing the type of kindergarten to send your child to, choose the kindergarten that suits your family needs.  The program and the teacher qualifications are the same at all types of kindergartens.

If you’re considering sending your child to a kindergarten in a Long Day Care service in Melbourne, we recommend you book a tour to see how our Explorers Early Learning kindergarten program is run.  We love questions!
